Introducing the first episode of my Nikon COOLPIX P1100 Super Zoom Variety Series! The next chapter begins!

Woo Hoo! The debut of my Nikon COOLPIX P1100 Super Zoom Variety Series is available on YouTube. You can watch it here. In each episode of this series, I'll be zooming in on an eclectic combination of subjects to illustrate the amazing zoom range of the P1100. We'll see how close we can get to all kinds of things, and we'll also celebrate the P1100's amazing optical zoom range which starts at a focal length of 24mm and goes all the way up to a focal length of 3000mm (35mm equivalent). That's a magnification of 125Xs! And I'm not afraid to use the P1100's in-camera digital zoom in the right circumstances which extends the zoom range to 12,000mm! That's a magnification of 500X!

"Variety" is a key word in this super zoom series. This series will include super zooming into just about anything you can think of. So you never know what you'll see in these videos! Well, except for this episode because I'm going to list out the zoom subjects a little further down in this article :)

By the way, I recently switched to the P1100 after shooting with the Nikon P1000 for six years, so I've also posted a bunch of P1000 Super Zoom Variety videos. You can find all my Nikon P1000 videos in my P1000 playlist on YouTube. There are only a few minor differences between the P1100 and the P1000 so fans of the P1100 might also enjoy the P1000 videos.

Given my love of super zooming, Episode 1 of the P1100 Variety Series is sure to be the first step in a long journey... the first brush stroke on a giant canvas... the first note of a symphony... the tip of the iceberg... One small zoom for man, one giant super zoom for mankind? OK, that last one might be a bit much. I'll stop now.

Here are the FIVE super zooms that you'll see in the inaugural episode of the P1100 variety series.

Hikers on A Mountain

#1 - Hikers on "A" Mountain in Tempe
The camera was located 0.7 miles (1.13 kilometers) from these hikers on "A" Mountain, also known as Tempe Butte. You'd never know they were up there without a super zoom camera!

A Starling bird

#2 - A Starling bird
We zoom in to the P1100's maximum optical focal length of 3000mm and then push on to the P1100's maximum digital magnification of 4Xs which is equivalent to a focal length of 12,000mm!

Ancient cliff dwelling

#3 - Ancient cliff dwelling
A cliff dwelling high up on a mountain in the Tonto National Forest was a safe place for the people that lived there between the 13th and 15th centuries, but we can easily see it from the valley floor with the Nikon P1100.

The best rooftop in Tucson

#4 - The Best Rooftop in Tucson
We zoom in to get a close-up look at my favorite rooftop in Tucson, AZ from Sentinel Peak Park which is 1.4 miles (2.28 kilometers) away.

A Blue Dasher dragonfly

#5 - Dragonflies
You can't get close enough to a dragonfly to snap a close-up picture with a cell phone or a regular camera. So how do you get a close-up image of a dragonfly from a distance?
