I'm on a quest this year to ride a lot of roller coasters. For 2019, I purchased a Platinum season pass from the Cedar Fair Entertainment Company. For one price, I can visit any of their thirteen amusement parks in the US and Canada as many times as I'd like. The Cedar Fair parks have a whole bunch of roller coasters, so the Cedar Fair Platinum season pass is a is a pretty good deal for me.

I recently visited Carowinds Amusement Park in Charlotte, NC. Carowinds has lots of things to do, but I really went with one primary thing in mind: roller coasters! I enjoy riding roller coasters, but I also like to make videos of them. I brought my Panasonic HC-V750 which can record in slow motion. The video at the end of this article includes clips of many of the coasters at Carowinds in slow motion, fast motion or regular speed.

A lot of Roller Coasters

Carowinds amusement park has fourteen roller coasters. Fourteen! That's a lot of roller coasters in one place. You'd have to go Six Flags Magic Mountain (19 roller coasters) or Cedar Point Amusement Park (17 roller coasters) to find more roller coasters in one place in the US. Incidentally, I've booked my travel to Cedar point for June, so check back on this website for my thoughts and a video of the Cedar Point coasters!

The coasters range from small and slow to insanely tall and ridiculously fast. Some coasters keep you upright while others flip you upside down in one way or another over and over again. So I would think that anyone who likes roller coasters should find something at Carowinds that they will enjoy.

Some of the coasters are for younger kids, so I'm going to remove the following roller coasters from my personal total coaster count because I'm kind of a grown-up: Wilderness Run, Woodstock Express, Kiddy Hawk, Ricochet and the Carolina Goldrusher. OK, I could probably leave Carolina Goldrusher on the list of coasters that are not geared towards kids, but I chose not to ride it and it's not in my video below.

That leaves nine roller coasters on my total coaster count for Carowinds. That's still a lot of coasters in one place. I enjoyed them all and they are all in my video below.

Carowinds in the Rain

I was at Carowinds for three days in early April. On Friday and Sunday, it was cloudy with light rain on and off throughout the day. On Saturday, it was mostly sunny. On rainy days, you can ride most, if not all of the roller coasters in one day. I didn't see any coasters that were closed due to rain, although I would expect the park to close down some of all of the coasters if there was lightning in the area.

The lines to get on the rides weren't bad on the rainy days so I didn't see a need for a Fast Lane ticket. At Cedar Fair amusement parks, a Fast Pass ticket allows you to bypass the line of people waiting to get on the line and proceed directly to the ride loading area. The one exception was the new coaster, Copperhead Strike. On Thursday morning, I walked half way up the stairs to the loading area before having to wait. But after that and for the rest of my trip, there was a moderately long line.

The one thing to keep in mind is that traveling at high speeds on a roller coaster in the rain can kind of hurt! Those seemingly harmless rain drops in the air will hit your face or any other exposed area of skin at high velocity which kind of stings on the faster moving roller coasters. Have you looked at the top speed of Fury 325? Ouch! No worries though, just be sure to ride in a seat towards the back.

The good news is that less than ideal weather means less people at the park and that means less waiting in lines. As I move on to other Cedar Fair parks, I'll be happy to see cloudy weather with a little light rain.

Here's the video of the nine roller coasters that I rode in at Carowinds Amusement Park. Carowinds does not allow you to hold anything in your hands while you ride roller coasters, so I couldn't record video while on the ride. I recorded the video clips with both feet planted firmly on the ground or from high in the air on the Carolina Sky Tower.

The unique thing about the video is that most clips are in slow motion or fast motion! One thing I should point out is that the video clip of the main drop on Fury 325 is actually normal speed. Fury gets going so fast (95 MPH) that people have assumed that the video clip is speed up. Nope, Fury 325 travels that fast!

In another clip of the video, you'll see what it might look like if there were two trains running at the same time in opposite directions on the Flying Cobras roller coaster. Rest assured that in real life, there is only one train at a time on the track!
